A couple days ago I visited the Georgia Theatre in Athens to see Sam Burchfield & Pip the Pansy perform. I have loved both of their music for quite some time… back when Pip the Pansy was known as “Wrenn”… and back before the two talented artists got married! Attending a show where they both performed (and did a couple duets!) was such a treat. Pip the Pansy introduced us to her new music during this special early release show in anticipation of the EP she’s releasing in September. I didn’t think I could become more obsessed with her, but I was wrong. Her new stuff is KILLER. Can’t wait for Royal Blue Daydream to drop!
I’ve photographed both of these incredible artists before off the stage, but I had yet to try out “concert photography” until this show. Having no experience with shooting indoor shows, I didn’t even know what gear to bring. I settled on only bringing one lens, my “nifty fifty,” mainly because it’s my lightest lens, and hey, I wanted to enjoy the concert too. :) Things I learned from this experience: When you’re shooting in a crowded space like a concert, it really stinks being 5’3″. Dodging the moving heads that were constantly in front of me was quite the challenge. I also learned that trying to change my Kelvin white balance continuously as the lighting changed was NOT realistic. Those colored flood lights were constantly changing in color temperature, direction, and brightness. Despite these obstacles that I did not anticipate, I am really excited with some of the photos I captured. And I very much enjoyed the show. :)
