Madelyn & Brady’s elopement in downtown Athens is one of my favorite things I’ve ever photographed, and that means a lot because my camera broke at the very beginning. No, really…
I captured their First Look outside the courthouse, and then we walked inside, passed through the metal detector, and made our way to where family was waiting. As Madelyn’s family was getting their first sight of her, I went to snap a picture and my shutter broke. I knew instantly something was very wrong, but I didn’t have time to lose because of what was unfolding in front of me. I spent about 60 seconds in a corner, my heart pounding as I tried to troubleshoot the problem on the spot… Turn off & on, battery in & out, new battery, new flash. Nothing worked. I knew then that the camera was just done. Fortunately this is why you hire a professional! Without letting the couple know anything was wrong, I immediately began shooting on my second camera (yes, professionals should ALWAYS have backup gear with them!). We then proceeded with the entire event and never skipped a beat (although I did cry once I drove home).
I am a HUGE fan of elopements. They’re so practical, money-saving, intimate, and can be ANYTHING you want them to be. There are no rules. Madelyn is my first bride to wear a black wedding dress, and I about died when I saw it… SO elegant and stunning. Her entire vibe was extremely classic and a tad vintage, which drew me to a lot of Black & White imagery. Her mom helped make her bouquet. After an intimate ceremony and then some photos with close family, Madelyn decided to ditch her shoes and proceeded to walk around all of downtown Athens barefoot… in 45 degree WINDY weather (I had about 5 layers on). I love that kind of attitude.
I followed them around the Classic City where they met, and they decided to make a pitstop at Chick-Fil-A on the way to the Arch. Everything about this was so fun and special to them, and then they headed to Atlanta to enjoy the rest of their evening celebrating.
