I met Nikki after studying abroad in South Africa with her sister, Jenna, and it only took one meeting to know how much I liked Nikki. She was kind, down-to-earth, and made me feel so special just from our one conversation. Fast forward a couple years, and Nikki contacted me to tell me that she was engaged and looking for a wedding photographer. I was obviously stoked at the idea of working with such a sweet person, and then she told me that her wedding would be in Charleston – one of my bucket list locations!
Nikki & Mac’s wedding at Boone Hall Plantation was scheduled for October, but Hurricane Matthew hit that weekend causing much of Charleston to evacuate! There was no way their family & friends could travel in, and the venue didn’t know what kind of damage they might be dealing with after the storm. I remember the shock and sadness I felt when I found out the Wednesday before their wedding weekend that it had to be rescheduled… And I can only imagine what Nikki & Mac were feeling after spending so long planning this dream day! The good news? They were able to reschedule for a couple months later and pretty much ALL of their vendors were available for the new date.
I know their October wedding would’ve been amazing, but it’s hard to imagine their wedding day being any more perfect than it was in December. We were blessed with beautiful sunny skies and a temperature that was not too cold but not hot enough to sweat. Nikki had gotten her bridesmaids pashminas once her wedding became a winter wedding, but it was warm enough to throw them on and off as desired. I drove up the day before the wedding to scout out the venue & meet up with Nikki & Mac, and you can view the photos from their pre-wedding shoot and read more about their love story here.
Nikki & the ladies got ready on the morning of the wedding at Nikki’s mother’s house, which is right on a river and absolutely gorgeous. They then traveled over to Boone Hall Plantation — talk about a DREAM VENUE. Boone Hall Plantation welcomes you with an avenue of large oak trees hanging over the road. Since I’ve never lived anywhere coastal, Spanish moss is such a treat for me. I was so inspired by every backdrop the venue has to offer that I NEED to go back and visit again. Nikki & Mac shared a super sweet First Look and then had fun taking pictures with their wedding party around the property. After a touching ceremony, they enjoyed their cocktail hour with family & friends and then followed a musician down the avenue of oaks to their reception at the Cotton Dock. Talk about a FUN reception – the live band kept the dance floor hopping all night up until the sparkler exit. All in all, it was truly a dream day for this amazing couple. They recently returned from their honeymoon trip to South Africa (which is funny since South Africa is what originally brought Nikki into my life), and now I am so thrilled to share their photos with you!!
